After a nice dinner at the hotel in San Francisco and a comfortable night, we
woke up leisurely the morning of September 30, had a light breakfast in our
room and then went out for a walk around the marina. The shuttle met us
promptly at 10:15 AM and we were at the airport in no time. Now we were
on our own with four pieces of luggage to check in and four carry-on items to
lug around. Surprisingly, we had no trouble finding a cart and making
our way to the United desk. Check in went like a breeze. Our
check in luggage weighed in just right and all our documents were in
order. Everyone was pleasant and we got through security without a
hitch. We had a quick lunch and then embarked on our journey across the
Pacific. Talked to Mom and Melani while we were waiting at the
gate. I forgot to wish Melani a happy birthday. By the time we
reach Korea
the day will be passed. At least I sent her a card.
As I am writing this, we are about half way through the
flight. We have listened to some Harry Potter, had another meal,
Courtney has watched a movie and I have read about 140 pages of “Dreams From
My Father” by Barak Obama. This is a very long flight. I find
myself looking forward to the next meal which I really do not need. I
changed the time on my laptop to Seoul
time about an hour ago to begin to adjust. It is very light outside and
has been the whole trip. I think the pilot called this a daylight
flight. It’s never going to get dark outside so we keep the window
shades down. We’ve been up once to take a walk around the plane and
stretch our legs. Not very far to walk, but it did feel good.
We arrived at the airport in Seoul on time, the evening of October 1,
around 6:15 PM. Got through customs and picked up our baggage without a
hitch. When we walked outside, the Korean contingent was waiting to
take us to the hotel. The gentleman held a sign that said “Cheongju 2007
IPC Archery World Championship. Welcome to Korea,
U.S.A.
Courtney and Janice Walth.” We were so relieved. We weren’t
really sure how we were getting to the hotel. They took our picture
holding the poster and then again once we got into the van. We road
with the team from Hong Kong and one of the team members from Canada.
We were exhausted and were totally surprised to find out that we had a three
hour ride to the hotel in Cheongju. We got to the hotel around 10:00
PM. After calling Mom to tell her we had arrived and talking to Ted and
Linda briefly, we went to bed. Our entire trip took about 24 hours from
hotel room to hotel room.
